THE ARBËRESHE MUSEUM

A project
launched in 1975

Originally conceived as an exhibition of agricultural and pastoral life, in 1975, and serving, in the years immediately following, to recover and showcase objects of material culture, left in their original settings within the farmhouses of the historic centre, the Museum became a cultural institution recognised both formally, through its founding administrative documents, and through the activities and events it has promoted or participated in from the 1980s to the present day.

The current structure

Opened in 1993, the Museum is housed in a building in the historic centre, created by repurposing old, disused buildings to form a museum space of great interest. On display are artefacts of material culture; the oral, folk and agro-pastoral traditions are documented; and the roots and identity of the Arbëreshë ethnic and linguistic minority are showcased.

The functions of the exhibition space are complemented by the specialist library for Albanian speakers, established in 1979, and the ‘Objects of Memory’ exhibition, set up in 1987.
